Counting our way through the Omer means we are ver Counting our way through the Omer means we are very close to the holiday of Lag Ba’Omer, which occurs on the 33rd day of the Omer, this year starting next week on the evening of May 15th. Lag Ba’Omer remembers when Jewish students had to hide their Torah learning (disguising their learning as them hunting with bows and arrows or picnicking), celebrates the lives of great rabbis Akiva and Shimon, takes a pause in the mourning period of Omer to cut hair and have weddings, and often includes celebrating with bonfires with friends and family ❤️

I set up this year’s Lag Ba’Omer Shelfie with activities from previous years and I can’t wait for my kids to explore and enjoy throughout this next week:

- Lag Ba’Omer @pjlibrary books
- Lag Ba’Omer sensory bin made with scarves, DIY clay marshmallows and cardboard and felt s’mores
- Our wedding album ❤️
- Lag Ba’Omer 3 Part Cards
- Pretend Play Picnic Food
- Felt Bonfire Invitation
- Jewish Wedding Nomenclature Cards
- Toilet Paper Hair Cutting Invitation
- Felt S’mores Invitation
- Bow and arrow and tree target number matching cards
- 33 Do a Dot

Hanukkah in May? When you have a fun new game to t Hanukkah in May? When you have a fun new game to try out, you are definitely excited to celebrate Hanukkah any time of the year 😂 We are so lucky that we got to try out this new Hanukkah board game and I must admit, I had no idea how uninformed I was about Hanukkah trivia and I absolutely loved getting the chance to learn more about this holiday while getting to also enjoy special time with my family 🙌

This game can be played with small or large groups and does involve reading but all ages can attempt to answer the trivia questions and of course learning is happening with each question! My youngest boys were actually the most fascinated with it and kept asking questions even after we made it all around the Hanukkiah ❤️

The creators of this game, Anya and Irina Kagan, are a Jewish sister duo who’ve created this Hanukkah board game to bring some light and joy to the Jewish community. They hope to launch Gifts Galore: Hanukkah with a Kickstarter campaign this June.

It was a special treat to get to play this game in May (the gelt was a fun addition too haha) and I know it will become a Hanukkah family tradition, perfect for our traditional second night of Hanukkah theme, Game Night!!

If you want a chance at playing this game with your family sign up for their newsletter at https://www.giftsgaloregames.com/p/hanukkah.html so you’ll be the first to find out when the Kickstarter goes live!

We also celebrated with some brownie bites sprinkled with blue and white sprinkles in the shape of 77 because why not?! Tomorrow night we will continue the celebration at our local @hillelatdavisandsac Israel Fest.

In honor of Israel’s birthday, and to help Israelis during the terrible wildfire devastation, we also made a donation to Jewish National Fund @jnfusa for their support of Israeli wildfire efforts.

Can you celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut without making Can you celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut without making an Israeli flag? Probably but we’ve never tried and we don’t want to start now 🤪 Over the years we’ve made Israeli flags in many different ways—collages, salt painting, dot stickers and more. This year we made collage windsocks in both my classroom and at home and they were a huge hit. Who wouldn’t want to get to sing and dance around with streamers trailing behind you? We topped it off with some DIY Happy 77th Birthday Israel crowns. When I teach about Israel, I always like to share about the diversity of topography, activities, landmarks, food, and people. This year I made our own Israel symbols for the kids to color in that represent a bit of that diversity and are great starting points for deeper conversations. Yesterday my students were the most focused creating these crafts than I’ve seen them all year! Getting to see them crafting Israel, then doing the parade as we sang Hatikvah really warmed my heart. At home after school today we didn’t do a parade but we did do a dance party and that was pretty fun too 🙌

The Israeli flag template is available as a free printable on our website in our Yom Ha’atzmaut Hub, link in bio. Check out the other activities we’ve enjoyed over the years and have so much fun preparing to wish Israel a happy 77th birthday!!

And may our voices and actions all loudly proclaim NEVER AGAIN 💔

Last night, after lighting a candle for my grandpa Last night, after lighting a candle for my grandpa, we came together to create this Yom HaShoah mosaic candle tray. I already had in my mind that it would be a family project, all of us working together to create something beautiful out of tiny little pieces. I think it was especially beautiful as an act of healing and togetherness that we also needed.

My goal for this little mosaic candle tray is to have something special that we bring out each Yom HaShoah, to place the yahrzeit candle on it, and light it with intention: to remember the lost lives of our adopted Shoah children, as well as all those lives that were so brutally and tragically ended during the Holocaust. To say their names and carry their history with us from generation to generation. May such atrocities never happen again ❤️

I would love to hear your thoughts—should I write out the names of our adopted Shoah children directly on the tray (we plan to add more with each child’s bet mitzvah), or just have these names written out on a piece of paper that’s next to the tray? I can’t decide!

If you are also interested in adopting a child of the Shoah, we have adopted through @onemorecandle as a family and through the Remember Us Project: The Holocaust B’nai Mitzvah Project (http://www.remember-us.org) in conjunction with our kiddo’s bet mitzvah.

Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, starts thi Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, starts this Wednesday night. And this year I felt like we needed to do a little more learning, exploring, and really feeling about it. Yesterday I shared the famous butterfly poem with the kids, thanks to this beautiful printout from @yadvashem @echoesreflections Echoes and Reflections. We then created our own nature butterfly prints, which really felt so in line with the poem—symbols of nature that were once had, but so horribly lost, during the Holocaust.

Thanks to all the wonderful shares of new Holocaust books on International Holocaust Day, we’ve added some really meaningful, and achingly beautiful, Holocaust books to our collection. I have also now found some additional Holocaust books that look like they would be an important and helpful addition to a family’s bookshelf, as well as kid-oriented Holocaust resources, from @kar_benpublishing .

This is such a horribly tough and terrible topic to discuss with children. I’m grateful for the guidance that exists. And the ability to explore these big and powerful feelings, and history, through art. I think it really does help.

Two nights of Seder gives us more opportunities to Two nights of Seder gives us more opportunities to tell our story, be together in community, and deeply think about captivity and freedom ❤️

We always try to change things up a little bit for the second night so it still feels engaging and encourages us to explore the themes of Passover:
- Different tablescape, including a different Seder plate
- Different Haggadah (the @thehaggadahcollective Hug-It-Out Haggadah is so wonderful)
- Different hands-on activity (the littles did a plague posting activity while we called out the name of each plague and everyone decorated peg dolls to add to our Exodus decoration)

We also set up our Counting the Omer moveable counter that we made last year. Because it’s also very much ok to reuse decorations and activities that we enjoy 🙌

So appreciate the resources and supplements (@thehaggadahcollective @annaabramzonart ) to keep the hostages in our thoughts. May they be in their own homes celebrating Passover next year (and much sooner) 🙏 May we all work towards freedom for all ❤️ Chag Pesach Sameach ❤️

Chag Pesach Sameach ❤️ Some highlights of th Chag Pesach Sameach ❤️

Some highlights of this year’s first night Seder:
- My fiend joining us for the seder ❤️
- No one realizing we had forgotten to put out the horseradish until an embarrassingly long time into the Seder 🤪
- My eight year old being able to read more of the Haggadah this year
- That same eight year old asking to tell the magid, the story of Passover, which he did all by himself, without looking at the Haggadah, but using our puppets and his memory. Such a kvelling moment!
- My husband dancing around in the ten plagues headband
- Everyone dancing around and singing and shaking their tambourines to Miriam’s song, always my favorite
- My youngest’s birthday treat of matzah toffee with a birthday candle to blow out
- All the beauty and tradition and kid-made creations and love that is present each time we celebrate Passover ❤️

Next year may we all be free (and please please please G-d may freedom come far sooner than next year 🙏)

Introducing this year’s Plague Bags! So crazy si Introducing this year’s Plague Bags! So crazy simple and I’m all for that 🙌 I printed out the Ten Plagues from @jewishtogether 2024 Passover coloring set. I cut each one out then taped each to a pipe cleaner which I attached to a headband. We will have crayons on our Seder table already but otherwise I would drop some in the bag along with this super cool Ten Plagues Headband for the kids to pull out, color, shout out each plague name, and wear during our Seder ❤️ Easy, peasy, learning, fine skill practice, and of course, some Passover fun 🙌
If you’re looking for a wonderful way to excite If you’re looking for a wonderful way to excite and engage kids in the preparation of the Seder, inviting them to read a sweet Passover book and enjoy a snacktivity is a good start! Roadside Seder by @booksfromanna just came out this year and it’s such a lovely tale of community, creativity, perseverance and a very sweet Passover Seder (even comes with a charoset recipe!)!! The kids were fully absorbed is the story and loved the ending—[spoiler alert!] when the community comes together to make a lovely Passover Seder despite the setbacks they had incurred during the story.

We paired this reading with a charoset mix-in invitation! Many families enjoy their family charoset, recipes passed down generation to generation. It’s a lovely example of l’vor v’dor. It can also be exciting to offer some changes to that tradition with different fruits (fresh or dried) and nuts and let the kids explore by mixing different combinations and of course trying them out. I set out a muffin tin with many different types of fruits and nuts with honey and apple juice on the side and let the kids mix and match and stir and taste! They recorded their mixtures on a Charoset Tracker, scoring them based on the number of smiley faces they thought the mixture deserved 🙌 It was cute and fun and tasty too! Next time I’ll remember to include some spices like cinnamon and cardamom to mix in too!

Guess what—you can still order Roadside Seder in time for Passover! It can be a sweet way to review the importance of community during a Passover Seder or save it for the afikomen prize! Either way, your family will enjoy it ❤️

The charoset tracker is available as a free printable, link in bio. Perhaps it could be a fun addition to your Passover preparations or even an activity during the Seder itself!

And a very important question: what kind of charoset mixture do you make for Passover?

My Passover bin is the fullest and heaviest holida My Passover bin is the fullest and heaviest holiday storage bin in the house 🤪 Once it’s opened up, all kinds of magic flows out—history, tradition, ritual items, and the sweetest kid-made crafts that I’ve saved over the years ❤️ My Seder preparation process is to write out the details on my Passover Seder Planner (yep, it’s a free printable you can find in our Passover Hub!), then I start pulling out the actual items I’ll need to set our Seder table. For us, it’s not just those ritual objects of the Seder plate, Haggadah, and Miriam and Elijah’s cups (although those are of course so important!). I also pull out decorations and other interactive objects that will help our Seder not only feel kid-friendly but kid-involved ❤️

We’ve reviewed the Passover story, preparing us We’ve reviewed the Passover story, preparing us for the magid section of the Seder, which brings us to the next part of our Passover learning: the Passover Seder!!! To introduce this topic to my kiddos, I chose an easy and favorite activity, a sensory bin 🙌 I voyaged through my dark and messy pantry to find a box of leftover matzah from last year (yes, it’s a gift that keeps giving!), set out our Passover Seder Nomenclature Cards on the table top and their matching images in the bin, then tossed broken matzah pieces on top. I invited the boys to search, find, match and name the Seder images, which they did with pleasure. And yes, some noshing took place too 😂

The Passover Nomenclature Cards can be found on their own or as part of our Passover Activities Packet for Early Learners, both found in our website shop, link in bio.

Miriam’s Timbrel hack coming your way 🙌 We fi Miriam’s Timbrel hack coming your way 🙌 We finished our Passover story review by discussing how the Israelites finally escaped Egypt, crossing the Red Sea, and dancing in joy and freedom, led by Miriam and her timbrel. And, like almost every year, I wanted to make Miriam’s timbrel so we could enjoy shaking and dancing and feeling that love and joy. In previous years I’ve done the bean filling in the paper plates, with beans popping out through the stapled gaps or having to tape the entire perimeter of the plates. This hack makes it so much easier! Get a plastic bead necklace from Dollar Tree, tape it to the bottom plate, then staple the top plate just a few times, decorate and woo hoo: you have yourself a super easy timbrel or tambourine that can be decorated however you want and won’t have beans falling out everywhere 🙌

Let me know if you give it a try—I’ll be prepping it for 24 students for my class on Sunday!!

Next up in our Passover story review was the 10 pl Next up in our Passover story review was the 10 plagues! My youngest two created each of the plagues by decorating toilet paper rolls out of odds and ends I had around the house (yes, in my never-ending craft bins 🤪) and I love them so much! We used the 10 plagues section of @thehaggadahcollective Hug-It-Out Haggadah, which is one of the haggadot we use each year for our family Seder. I want the kids to be familiar with this section of the Haggadah so that when we get to this part of the Seder, the kids will be ready and able to fully participate by calling out the names of each plague, pointing to them in the Haggadah, and finding the corresponding toilet paper roll plagues on our Seder table 🙌

Whenever we do plague-related activities we talk about the seriousness and devastation that the plagues represent. Yes, we often make our plague crafts look cutesy, which I know is a trigger for some Jewish educators, but I feel comfortable that my kids can understand the seriousness of this part of the Passover story even when visuals are cute so long as we have a discussion that helps dig a little deeper.
