Description
Introduce this modern variation of ushpizin, the seven holy guests who you welcome into your sukkah during Sukkot. When I came across the Union for Reform Judaism article about welcoming seven holy guests of social justice work, I knew I wanted to explore this perspective of ushpizin with my family. Traditionally, the ushpizin, the seven holy guests, are the seven main patriarchs of Jewish history. However, I absolutely love this modern variation that incorporates women and the values of social justice. To learn why/how each social action value relates to the Jewish historical figure, please read the Union of Reformed Judaism article, which can be found at: https://reformjudaism.org/ushpizin-welcoming-seven-holy-guests-social-justice-work. The article includes discussion prompts for each value that I found very powerful.
These nomenclature cards are a wonderful way to engage your child in Jewish learning, as well as introducing and practicing vocabulary, matching, reading and learning about Jewish concepts.
– Practice identification of the ushpizin and their related social justice value/theme.
– Learn vocabulary related to the ushpizin and social justice themes.
– Match the symbol of the ushpizin with the guests’ names and social justice value.
– Memory game: Flip the cards with images face down and choose two at a time trying to match the cards. You could also print two copies of the PDF and match the cards exactly.
