Exploring a sensory bin filled with the ten plagues is a great way to learn all the plagues and with this 10 Plagues Sorting Sensory Bin kids will get to review the plagues, practice identifying and categorizing them, and have a sensory fun time while doing so!
What You’ll Need
- Sensory bin
- Sensory filler. We used crushed matzah from our Matzah Meal Tracing Tray so this could be a Kosher for Passover friendly sensory bin but you can use whatever sensory filler you have available.
- Items that represent each of the ten plagues. We used:
- Blood: band aids
- Frogs: plastic jumping frogs
- Lice: tiny lice plastic figurines
- Wild beasts: lion and tiger plastic figurines
- Cattle disease: cow, sheep and goat plastic figurines
- Boils: red vase gems
- Hail: ping pong balls
- Darkness: kid sunglasses
- Death of the Firstborn: paper suitcase. A sad face either drawn on paper, a rock or a figurine would work well too.
- 10 Plagues Counting Cards free printable (optional)
Putting It Together
- Put all your plague representative items in the sensory bin.
- Cover with your sensory filler.
- Set out the 10 Plagues Counting Cards, if using.
- Invite your child to look in the sensory bin, pull out an item, then match it with the correct plague by placing it on the corresponding plague counting cards. If you are not using the 10 Plagues Counting Cards, you can write or draw out the plagues, the numbers 1-10, or just set out 10 different areas to be able to set aside the plague items as the kids search and classify them.
Finished & Loving It!
We do multiple ten plagues activities every year because it’s such a helpful, hands-on way for the kids to review all the plagues. Because I am used to doing activities with them, it’s super easy for me to store and pull out these plague representations as needed. Many of these items stay in our Passover storage bin until I pull them out each year but the animal figurines live in our regular toy storage.
There are easy ways to create plague representations of you don’t already own items like these: draw them or print out the images! This activity can be super easy and simple, using what you already own or something you can easily make yourself.
Even though my kids see these same representations every year, they don’t care at all and are always excited for whatever activity we do with them! This 10 Plagues Sorting Sensory Bin was such a simple set up, and the kids enjoyed searching through the matzah and identifying each item they pulled out. Sometimes they weren’t sure what the item was. Most of the time once they thought about it they were able to make the match (like the locusts).
Setting out the 10 Plagues Counting Cards as the sorting guide made it really easy for the kids to get that added exposure and reinforcement of the different plagues. It helped them match and categorize the items they pulled out from the sensory bin. And, as an added bonus, they received exposure to numbers and the array just by seeing and working with the cards. Yay!
