My family won’t fully participate in the Shavuot tradition of staying up all night learning Torah, but I do plan to do some Torah learning during our Shavuot evening meal and also thought I’d introduce my preschooler to the letters of the Torah with this super simple Alef Bet Vet Dot Book to jumpstart his Hebrew, and eventual Torah, learning.
Our synagogue does not start formal Hebrew learning until third grade but I love exposing my kids to the Alef Bet letters, and to some Hebrew words, long before that. More exposure and more practice will make their bar and bat mitzvah prep much easier. And being able to read Torah in the Hebrew is always really special. I love this idea of a Hebrew version of an ABC book for my little guy to expose him to some Hebrew letters and to participate in some Hebrew learning for Shavuot.
What You’ll Need
- Alef Bet Vet Dot Book free printable
- Dot paints or stickers
Putting It Together
- Print out the Alef Bet Vet Dot Book.
- Staple it together to make it look like a book, if desired.
- Set out dot paints or dot stickers.
- Introduce each letter as your child turns the page. Invite them to use the dot paints or stickers to mark each circle.
Finished & Loving It!
I love the idea of exposing children to the alphabet and individual letters with lots of hands-on activities. It helps their muscle memory to create the letters in these fun ways. And of course more exposure helps the brain remember the name and shape of the letters themselves. Even though my preschooler is not yet formally learning Hebrew letters, I love that this book offers a similar fun way to expose him to them like we are doing with English letters.
Whether your kiddo uses a dot paint or stickers they are also practicing their fine motor skills. My guy loves using dot paints. I loved watching his concentration as he marked each circle and said the letter’s name.
Last year we had lots of fun using our Torah puppets to tell Torah stories during our Shavuot evening meal. I think we will do that again this year but now my preschooler can also share the three Hebrew letters he knows, the foundation for one day reading Torah in Hebrew!
I think it’s really lovely, and shows the Jewish value of education and knowledge, that one of the Shavuot traditions is studying. Even though we won’t be doing it all night, I love that this Alef Bet Vet Dot Book is a simple and fun way to encourage our kiddos to participate in this tradition of studying as well!
We have a whole page dedicated to Shavuot, our Shavuot Hub. Check it out! It will include some of the Shavuot activities we do this year, as well as the activities we’ve done in previous years.
And don’t forget our Shavuot Montessori-Style 3 Part Cards, and our Shavuot Activity Pack, a wonderful way to introduce the holiday!
