To continue our fun Rosh Hashanah apple symbol learning, I set up this simple Apple Yarn Wrapping invitation. It took some focus from the kids and even some try, try, try again mindset to figure out how to wrap the curved sides to create a sweet little Rosh Hashanah apple decoration.
What You’ll Need
- Cardboard
- Scissors
- Apple stencil (optional)
- Red, green or yellow yarn
- Tape
- Brown paper
- Green paper
Putting It Together
- Cut out an apple shape (minus the stem and leaf) from a piece of cardboard. I first printed out an apple graphic which I cut and used as a stencil to help me cut an apple shape from the cardboard.
- Cut a length of yarn.
- Tape the end of the yarn to the back of your apple cut out.
- Invite your child to wrap the yarn around the cardboard, ideally in different directions, until the yarn stops.
- Secure the yarn onto the back of the apple cut out with a piece of tape.
- Cut a stem from the brown paper and a leaf from the green; tape these to the top of your apple.
Finished & Loving It!
This was a short, but sweet Rosh Hashanah craft. I love using recycled cardboard for the base. And there’s a lot of flexibility in the size of the apple decoration that you want.
But my favorite part was watching the kids figure out how to wrap the yarn around the apple cut out without it slipping off. This took concentration and focus and some strategy. They also hand to figure out how to hold the apple cut out in one hand and wrap with the other. Such good practice for these kiddos!
Securing the yarn and the stem and leaf with tape made it super easy. My oldest first tried to glue on the leaf and stem but that just didn’t seem to work. I love when we have to problem solve on the go like this. It helps them be flexible and strategic.
The kids finished their Apple Yarn Wrapping pretty quickly and really enjoyed making their sweet little apples!
