Kids will enjoy this fun wax resist Candle Resist Hanukkiah Art using Hanukkah candles, making the perfect Hanukkah decoration! (Also, can you tell I’m too tired from bar mitzvah weekend to remember what I wanted to title this project? ;-)) Whatever name you want to call it, it’s simple and fun, has some cool science involved, and makes a pretty addition to your holiday decor!
What You’ll Need
- Hanukkah candles
- Hanukkiah cut out, using cardstock
- Watercolor paints
- Paint brushes
- Water
Putting It Together
- Give your child a Hanukkiah cut out. I just drew a hanukkiah on cardstock and cut it out.
- Invite them to use a Hanukkah candle to draw whatever they want on the Hanukkiah.
- When they are finished drawing, let them paint over their wax drawings with watercolor paints, revealing the hidden wax design!
Finished & Loving It!
This is another simple holiday craft, but it is really so much fun. I love having the kids use the Hanukkah candles in different ways. Yes they are special to light but it’s lovely to expose your children to them and let them physically handle and manipulate them. We use them in sensory bins, counting activities, and now, this awesome Candle Resist Hanukkiah Art!
Each of my kids approached the Hanukkah candle design part differently, as it should be! We had a minimalist, one who covered almost the entire hanukkiah with wax, and a focused-with-intention drawing. I love them all!
And of course the kids were so thrilled to paint over their designs and really reveal them! It truly is so much fun and makes for a lovely decoration for Hanukkah.
I prepared this activity for the preschool as well and it works lovely in that setting too. The only thing is cutting out that many hanukkiyot! I could not find a image I could use on my Cricut that wouldn’t cut off the flames and I really wanted those to remain so the kids could imagine the hanukkiah lit up and sending beautiful light into the world!
Our Hanukkah countdown is almost complete for this year, I just can’t believe it! I hope your Hanukkah is filled with light, laughter, hope and lots of love!
Chag Hanukkah Sameach!
We have a whole page dedicated to Hanukkah, our Hanukkah Hub. Check it out! It includes some of the Hanukkah activities we plan to do this year, as well as the activities we’ve done in previous years.
And don’t forget our Hanukkah Montessori-Style 3 Part Cards, a wonderful way to introduce Hanukkah! And, now we also have all 13 Jewish holidays bundled together in A Year of Jewish Holidays 3 Part Cards.
If you want to go full-on Hanukkah with your littles, you must try our Hanukkah Activities Packet for Early Learners! I am so excited about all the Hanukkah-themed literacy, fine motor skills, math, and play fun!
