My first grader is especially into science fizzy fun so I knew he, and all the kids, were sure to love this simple science meets sensory activity with a Hanukkah twist, our Fizzy Hanukkah Menorah Fun!
What You’ll Need
- 9 jars or containers, one taller than the rest (or stack two together to make one taller one like we did)
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Yellow food dye
- Hanukkah candles
- Tray
- Bowl
- Pipette
Putting It Together
- Set up the 9 jars/containers in a row on a tray.
- Pour baking soda into the base of each container.
- Add a Hanukkah candle to the middle. It should stand up if enough baking soda is there to support it but also totally fine if it lays against the lip of the container.
- Mix vinegar and yellow food dye in a bowl.
- Invite your child to transfer the yellow vinegar to the Hanukkah candle containers, “lighting” the Hanukkah candles with all kinds of fizzy magical fun!
Finished & Loving It!
I wish you could hear the squeals of excitement as the kids first “lit” the candles! They absolutely loved it!
I always love how easy baking soda + vinegar fizzy activities are to set up. And super easy to turn into whatever theme you’re looking for just by using molds or decorations or different colored food dyes. Bonus fine motor practice using the pipettes too!
It was really neat to have the visualization of lighting the candles with the color and fizz. We talked about how some hanukkiah use oil and some use candles, but all bring more light into the world and remind us of the miracles of long ago.
There are also numerous extension activities that could pair with this fizzy fun: talk about the scientific reactions involved, count the number of candles/containers, and of course pair with your favorite Hanukkah book that includes hanukkiah!
My heart filled with joy as I watched my kids be completely absorbed in this activity (literally, their hands soon got in the mix as well!). May their lives continue to be filled with light and joy, and may yours too, this Hanukkah and all year long!
Chag Hanukkah Sameach!
We have a whole page dedicated to Hanukkah, our Hanukkah Hub. Check it out! It includes some of the Hanukkah activities we plan to do this year, as well as the activities we’ve done in previous years.
And don’t forget our Hanukkah Montessori-Style 3 Part Cards, a wonderful way to introduce Hanukkah! And, now we also have all 13 Jewish holidays bundled together in A Year of Jewish Holidays 3 Part Cards.
If you want to go full-on Hanukkah with your littles, you must try our Hanukkah Activities Packet for Early Learners! I am so excited about all the Hanukkah-themed literacy, fine motor skills, math, and play fun!
