Some of our Favorite Mitzvah Activities

What is a mitzvah? This one word is so much a foundation of Judaism and living Jewishly and is such a beautiful concept. People often use the word mitzvah to mean “good deed.” But the Hebrew word mitzvah actually means “commandment.” In the Torah, there are 613 mitzvot (plural of mitzvah), things God has commanded people to do. That’s a lot! The way I teach about mitzvah to my children and students is that a mitzvah is doing something kind. There are so many ways of being kind. And that makes it very very possible for everyone, yes kids included!, to do mitzvot each and every day!

And important note is that a mitzvah must be an action. Thinking about it or wishing to do the act does not count. You have to actually do it! Once again, this is not only a beautiful foundation for our people and religion, but so empowering for young children. Do kind acts and make the world a better place!

Learning Goals

My learning goals for when I teach about mitzvot is that to perform a mitzvah is to do a good or kind act. Anyone can (and everyone should!) do as many mitzvot as they can each and every day. This is a way we perform tikkun olam, making the world a better place.

Common Mitzvah Symbols

When creating mitzvah activities, you might find the following symbols useful in explaining and exploring the concept:

  • Tzedakah boxes: represents the mitzvah of tzedakah and giving to charity
  • Hearts: can represent love and kindness
  • Specific acts of kindness that are important to you or that you want to teach about (sharing, visiting the sick, helping others, etc.)
