I know I said that ice cream isn’t everything about Shavuot, but that we would still be doing a lot of activities with it and here’s one more from today: Shavuot Puffy Paint Ice Cream Cones. This is such a fun art process and allows for creativity and sensory exploration. It’s also the longest I’ve seen my 11 year old participate in any of my crafts in a long time! Which means it’s highly recommended for ages 2-11, woo hoo!
What You’ll Need
- Shaving cream
- Glue
- Containers
- Food coloring
- Stirring stick
- Paint brushes
- Cardstock
- Brown cardstock
- Scissors or cricut
- Sprinkles
Putting It Together
- Cut out your ice cream cones from the brown cardstock with scissors or a cricut.
- Glue the cones to the cardstock.
- Make your DIY puffy paint by adding equal parts glue and shaving cream then coloring it with the food coloring. I used four small cups to prepare a different color of puffy paint in each cup.
- Invite your child to paint ice cream scoops above their cones with the DIY puffy paint.
- When they finish making their ice cream, they can add sprinkles.
Finished & Loving It!
All four of my kiddos loved this craft! They had so much fun painting with the unique feeling puffy paint. And for sure the two year old, and even the older ones, couldn’t resist touch testing it!
The puffy paint is so fluffy when wet and even springs back a bit when dried. It adds such a fun 3-D experience to their art work. And you really need to poke it! We were all mesmerized while painting and while watching it dry.
The kids also loved being able to add real sprinkles to their puffy paint ice cream! Doesn’t that just add some extra fun to the mix? I also love that the biggest grabbed some crayons and added some extra toppings. Way to take the creative initiative, kiddo!
As I’ve been doing all week when we’ve been engaging in our fun Shavuot ice cream activities, I reminded the kids that it’s tradition to eat dairy on Shavuot because Torah, and the land of Israel, is sweet like milk and honey. And today I even found biblical reference to share with them: “Like honey and milk [the Torah] lies under your tongue” (Song of Songs 4:11). And even though we didn’t get to eat this ice cream, it was still pretty sweet!
We have a whole page dedicated to Shavuot, our Shavuot Hub. Check it out! It will include some of the Shavuot activities we do this year, as well as the activities we’ve done in previous years.
And don’t forget our Shavuot Montessori-Style 3 Part Cards, and our Shavuot Activity Pack, a wonderful way to introduce the holiday!
