My kids and I love small world play and this Small World Picnic Play is such a fun way to celebrate Lag Ba’Omer! And yes, of course you could also set it up anytime of year but for a holiday whose tradition is picnicking, it’s perfect 🙂
What You’ll Need
- Sensory bin or tray
- Filler or base
- Mini picnic blanket
- Peg dolls
- Mini picnic food
Putting It Together
- Set up the picnic blanket on your base or sensory bin filler. We found ours at Dollar Tree–it’s one of those waxed paper food liners! But any piece of cloth would totally work.
- Add the peg dolls and mini picnic food.
- Invite your kids to play and explore!
Finished & Loving It!
I love finding opportunities for small world and peg doll play. Since I set this activity up on our Lag Ba’Omer Shelfie, I used our green wooden base to represent the green grass where this picnic is taking place. You could easily set it up with some green filler (dyed rice or pasta and green lentils) in a sensory bin or tray.
I made the mini food out of polymer clay for another activity a few years ago. Know what would be a super simple and fun alternative if you don’t want to make your own? All the gazillion options for mini erasers you can now find everywhere! Have fun mini food shopping!
The kids really enjoyed this set up. I enjoyed watching them play and engage with the invitation and each other. So much beautiful imaginary and creative play happening in this experience! Remember that the beauty of small world play is that it’s open-ended. Nothing specific is supposed to or has to happen. Here, it was fun to see the kids having the peg dolls “talk” to each other. And I saw some of the dolls eating some of the food, yum!
Looking for more Lag Ba’Omer small world invitations? I loved this one from last year!

We have a whole page dedicated to Lag Ba’Omer, our Lag Ba’Omer Hub. Check it out! It includes some of the Lag Ba’Omer activities we plan to do this year, as well as the activities we’ve done in previous years.
And don’t forget our Lag Ba’Omer Montessori-Style 3 Part Cards, a wonderful way to introduce Lag Ba’Omer! And, now we also have all 13 Jewish holidays bundled together in A Year of Jewish Holidays 3 Part Cards.
