With Rosh Hashanah coming up quickly after Back to School, it’s always a good thing for my family to have simple, easy and fun after school activities and this Fizzy Apples and Honey Play was exactly what the boys needed! The sensory play helped them decompress after a day at school (this is our first Monday back after school started last Tuesday). It was also fun to listen to them sing the Dip Your Apples in the Honey song while they played. Having the set up take less than 5 minutes was also a total winner for this tired Ima!
What You’ll Need
- Sensory bin
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Yellow food coloring
- Wooden or plastic apples (grab yours from Woodpeckers Crafts!)
- Containers (optional)
- Honey stir sticks (optional)
- Eye droppers (optional)
- Rosh Hashanah playlist (optional)
Putting It Together
- Add baking soda to a container.
- Add vinegar mixed with yellow food coloring to another container.
- Place the containers, wooden apples, eye droppers, and honey sticks in a sensory bin.
- Invite the kids to make the “honey” by dropping the vinegar into the baking soda.
- Dip those apples, sing along, and have fun!

Recently we read a Zoey and Sassafras book where Zoey references experiments making volcanoes out of baking soda and vinegar. My 4th grader was so excited and has been begging us to do it too. I told him we could do a similar experiment, but that it would be fun to add a Jewish twist to it. This Fizzy Apples and Honey Play was perfect! He got to see and create the reaction, play around with it, and enjoy some Rosh Hashanah fun!
This set up was super fast and easy for me because I already had all the items either in my craft and activity storage or in my Rosh Hashanah storage bin. I always keep eye droppers, baking soda and vinegar in stock because it’s just so quick and simple to create an engaging activity – themed or not!
The wooden apples and honey sticks added a special extra Rosh Hashanah element to this play. I loved seeing how the baking soda mixture dripped off the honey stick, kind of like real honey! To extend this activity, add some water after the reaction takes place. You can still have a fun time with a thicker water sensory bin, floating and pouring and mixing colors and Rosh Hashanah elements. Another extension would be reading your favorite Rosh Hashanah book(s) together! We always love Apples and Honey (very on point here!).
