Hamantaschen Matching Activity

Today I invited the kids to play with the Hamantaschen Matching Activity I set up for them. As intended, this set of cards has so many possibilities because I wanted it to work with the three big kids and what their different needs and goals are right now. All you need is to print the set and invite the kids to play!

What You’ll Need

Putting It Together

  1. Print out a Hamantaschen Matching Activity printable. If you want, you can print out two copies so that you have more activity possibilities.
  2. If you have access to a laminator, you can laminate the cards. I am a huge fan of our cheap little laminator and use it all the time. But these cards will still work totally fine without lamination!
  3. Color Match Activity: For the preschooler’s speech therapy goals we are working on articulation of colors. The hamantaschen are five different colors to let us practice saying the color name. Each color has a match so you can easily play a matching game and call out the colors as you turn the cards over and look for their match. We extended this activity by making this also a fishing game: add paper clips to the cards, hide them in a sensory bin, use a “fishing pole” of a popsicle with a magnet glued on and go fishing to find the matching number!
  4. If you printed two copies of the printable, you can also match by number and/or color and/or size of the hamantaschen.
  5. Number identification and counting: We are all about play-based fun here but I do like to include numbers and letters in ways that feel fun and natural. Each card has a number and the corresponding number of dots so you can practice counting.
  6. Bigger and smaller: another speech therapy goal is for my preschooler to identify which items are larger and smaller. The set of 10 cards increase in size. You can invite the child to line them up by size or take two cards and ask which is larger.
  7. Addition and subtraction: my first grader enjoyed setting up addition and subtraction math facts.
  8. Fractions: the 4th grader just started learning fractions in school so this was a fun way to create and visually show equivalent fractions.

Finished & Loving It

The kids really enjoyed playing with this Hamantaschen Matching Activity set and I loved how we could make so many activities out of just one set.

My preschooler especially enjoyed using the “fishing rod” to fish out his matches. This of course allows him to practice matching objects, colors, identifying the names of colors, and fine motor skills. Yay!

And the visuals were really helpful for my older kids to practice their math facts. They can see and count the numbers if they need to and that helps them solve the math facts.

I really love hands-on learning activities, especially ones that combine our Jewish holidays or values with skill sets that are interesting or important for the kids to practice. And, as always, they have to be fun!

What matching activity would you like to play with these hamantaschen cards?
