Today I wanted to teach the kids a little bit about a kibbutz and these special communities in Israel so I set up a Kibbutz Harvest Sensory Bin. It’s another super simple set up and concept but with awesome learning opportunities for Jewish learning + age differential skill development! My daughter read off the short info sheet and I invited all of them to engage with the very simple farming (or maybe just farm harvest!) themed sensory bin I made.
What You’ll Need
- Sensory bin
- Rice or other sensory filler
- Fruits and vegetables puzzle (or objects or cards!)
- Alphabet letters (we love our wooden letters from Woodpeckers Crafts! Use WithLoveIma5 for a discount!!)
Putting It Together
- Pour your sensory filler into the sensory bin.
- Add fruits and vegetables puzzle pieces, objects or cards on top.
- Add alphabet letters that match to the first letter of each of the objects.
- Read or share a little about what a kibbutz is and its importance in Israel.
- Invite your child to match the puzzle pieces together and match the alphabet letter to the beginning sound of each food or just match the letters to the objects or cards you’ve chosen.
Finished & Loving It!
My toddler is super into peg puzzles so I thought he’d love finding then matching the fruits and vegetables from the sensory bin to the puzzle.
I added letters for my preschooler so he could sound out each name of the fruits and vegetables and match the appropriate letter that they start with.
They both loved doing the searching and matching and then having free play (of course!).
I loved that they were both practicing age appropriate skills connected to their current interests and with a connection to Israel!
Can you tell that all my activities this week have been simple set ups? May is BUSY! It always feels like this mad dash to cram so much in before the school year ends. So simple set ups are a wonderful way to continue our learning in a fun way and without adding more crazy to my life!
We have a whole page dedicated to Yom Ha’atzmaut, our Yom Ha’atzmaut Hub. Check it out! It will include some of the Yom Ha’atzmaut activities we do this year, as well as the activities we’ve done in previous years.
