Falafel Transfer

One of my favorite Israeli foods is falafel so I thought it would be fun to create an activity inspired by this tasty dish; hence, our Falafel Transfer! A super simple activity with awesome fine motor skills practice. Yay!

What You’ll Need

  • Brown or beige felt
  • Needle and thread
  • Brown pom poms
  • Tongs

Putting It Together

  1. Fold your piece of felt in half and cut a half circle shape. Mine was approximately 6 by 4 inches.
  2. Sew the bottom of the half circles (the curved part) together. Leave the top (the flat side) open.
  3. Set up some brown pom poms, the felt pita and tongs.
  4. Invite your child to transfer the pom poms into the felt pita with the tongs.

Finished & Loving It!

This was such a simple but fun activity! My preschooler loved moving all the pom poms into the pita, then dumping them out and trying again. Even the toddler gave it a try!

It does take some concentration and maneuvering to hold the pita open with one hand so the other one can transfer the pom poms. Your kiddo may need help opening the pita like my toddler did. That way they can just focus on the transferring practice. But if they’re up for trying to do both, awesome!

We paired this activity with one of our favorite books, 3 Falafels in my Pita, and the activity I created last year with the same name. Such a fun way to learn about Israel through food and other symbols!

Now … who’s hungry?! I think I should try this with real falafel balls and chopsticks yum yum!

We have a whole page dedicated to Yom Ha’atzmaut, our Yom Ha’atzmaut Hub. Check it out! It will include some of the Yom Ha’atzmaut activities we do this year, as well as the activities we’ve done in previous years.

And don’t forget our Yom Ha’atzmaut Montessori-Style 3 Part Cards, a wonderful way to introduce the holiday!
