Any nature scavenger hunt is a fun way to engage with nature, but this Mount Sinai Nature Scavenger Hunt combines nature, colors, and the holiday of Shavuot for some fun, hands on learning!
What You’ll Need
- Cardboard or this really cool painters palette! We love all Woodpeckers Crafts products and when I saw this one, I instantly knew we could have so much fun with it and all kinds of color activities! If you choose to buy your own painters palette, make sure to use the discount code WithLoveIma5 😉
- Acrylic paint in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet
- Paintbrushes
- Yarn or clothespins (optional)
- Access to nature
Putting It Together
- Use your acrylic paint and brushes to paint each color in a section on your cardboard or painters palette. We did ours in rainbow order, each color in a vertical strip.
- Let the paint dry.
- If you want, wrap yarn around your cardboard or painters palette to create a loom. Or have some clothespins ready to go.
- Invite your child to take the colored cardboard or painters palette outside and find nature items that correspond to each color. When they find a nature object they want to use, they can either weave it through the yarn rows or clip it to the colored section with the clothespin. If you chose not to use these extras, just have them lay the nature item on the matching colored section.
- Talk about Mount Sinai and how when the Jewish people received the Torah, Mount Sinai burst into bloom.
Finished & Loving It!
We love being outdoors, whether it’s sitting still and soaking up the sounds, sights and smells, hiking, swimming, playing or, going on a nature scavenger hunt! Backyard or further afield can have so many opportunities for exploration and play, as well as learning.
I loved combining our scavenger hunt enjoyment with a color search. This is such a great way to add a deeper level to just being outside or searching for nature. It helps the kiddo think critically about what they are looking for, analyzing the objects and identifying those that correspond to the colors they are looking for. And with this loom option, they also practiced fine motor skills as they wove the nature items through the yarn loom. All cool, important skills!
There are many simple extension options here: What is their favorite nature item? Why? What colors are they finding? Are there certain colors that they are finding more of? What animals might be attracted to these colors and nature items?
I loved setting up this activity with the beautiful painter’s palette from Woodpeckers Crafts. The rainbow coloring just makes me so happy but it also is a fun way to show the spectrum of colors on the rainbow. I imagine all kinds of fun color matching activities using this palette in our future!
Along with color identification and matching, this is a lovely way to get out in nature and immerse ourselves when thinking about what it might have been like to witness Mount Sinai blooming. Were the same colors present? The same flowers and plants and nature? Imagine!
