We create a sensory bin every year for Purim but this year we changed it up a bit and made it a Purim Sensory Rescue Bin and Wall! Sensory bins are a perfect hands-on way to prepare and celebrate Purim. For this twist, all you need to add is some tape to your favorite Purim Sensory Bin and it feels like an entirely new activity!
What You’ll Need
- Bin, tub or sensory table
- Filler–we used pom poms and crepe paper. Rice or beans would work too!
- Purim symbols: we used a play mask, crown confetti, plastic jewels, plastic horse figurines, homemade felt hamantaschen (we made these last year and they are so fast and easy to make and are so cute!), and groggers
- painters tape, masking tape or BamTape
Putting It Together
- Set up your Purim sensory bin by adding your choice of filler, then placing the Purim symbols on top.
- Criss cross your tape but still leave openings for the kids’ hands or tongs to fit through.
- Invite your kids to use tongs to “rescue” the Purim symbols. They will need to carefully grab the symbols with the tongs and bring them out without breaking the tape.
- For the Rescue Wall, tape your symbols to the wall and invite your child to peel off the tape and “rescue” the symbols. This activity is great for babies who are too young to play safely in the sensory bin. Choose items that are not choking hazards, tape them to the wall, and let your younger kiddo enjoy pulling off the tape and playing with the symbol.
Finished & Loving It!
I’m big on identifying and using consistent symbols to help reinforce the main elements and characters of each holiday. So in this year’s Purim sensory bin I have a mask, crown confetti, plastic jewels, plastic horse figurines, homemade felt hamantaschen (we made these last year), and homemade groggers. We made our groggers from the Make It Jewish tutorial and they are so fantastic—empty recycled container (yay bal tashchit!) + beads + her adorable labels and we have the sweetest little DIY groggers to use for our sensory bin and other play. So in love 🥰
You can add extension activities to the Purim Sensory Rescue Bin and Wall to make the fun activity go even further and last longer. Try challenging your kids by telling them which item to take out, quiz them what the symbol means, or create a fun matching activity after they find the items.
My baby (almost 10 months) is too young to safely play at the Purim Sensory Rescue Bin with the choking hazards of the pom poms, stickers, and jewels. So the Purim Wall Rescue was absolutely perfect for him. He loved peeling off the tape (yay fine motor skills!) and rescuing the items. I made sure to not include any of the small choke hazard items for him but I would have added the jewels and crowns for the older kids.
We will continue to play with this Purim Sensory Rescue Bin and Wall the next two weeks, adding and changing a few things to keep it interesting and fun. I love how easy it is to set up and how excited the kids were to rescue everything!
