With Purim less than a month away, we set up our Purim Shelfie and started reading our favorite books, engaging in some meaningful activities, and having a really fun time while learning!
Setting up a Purim Shelfie is super easy, and can totally be with whatever Purim items you already have on hand. You can also add crafts, decorations and activities as you do them throughout the next few weeks as you prepare for Purim. For us, it’s a really great way to showcase the holiday, as well as some of its symbols, and provide these important and fun connections.
What You’ll Need
These are the items I already had on hand (or made with the kids) that might inspire you to look around and see what you could gather for some Purim fun!
- Your favorite Purim books–we organized ours in our Purim Book Box that we made last year
- DIY hamantaschen garland (ours from last year got destroyed so the littles and I made a new one, so fast and easy!)
- Purim Reading Bingo Challenge
- Groggers and other noisemakers (use whatever you already have or make your own groggers with beans or rice in a container)
- I Spy Grogger
- Purim Montessori-Style 3 Part Cards (available separately or as part of the Purim Activity Bundle!)
- Boo Haman! Posting Activity (ours from previous years got destroyed so we upgraded this year and I love it! I especially love the simple addition of adding grogger and hamantaschen tops to the popsicle sticks)
- Basket of play food for Mishloach Manot
- Basket of dress up clothes/costumes
- Paper crowns by @jewishtogether
- DIY felt crowns
- DIY felt hamantaschen
- Purim Clothespin Dolls

- Horse figurines to represent Mordecai and peg dolls by @melanieshanks35 for open ended play
- Wooden blocks for Shushan building invitation
Putting It Together
- Gather your Purim books, crafts, decorations, and activities.
- Display them on a shelf/shelves
- Invite your kids to come take a look. It’s that easy!
Finished & Loving It!
We started doing holiday shelfies a few holidays ago, inspired by the fabulous Ariel Loves and her amazing shelfies. I really love how they showcase each holiday. I also like that we set up the shelfies in the kids’ playroom because I want them to engage and play with these items throughout the weeks leading up to and throughout the holiday itself. Having the holiday items (kid-friendly ones of course!) easily accessible, and inviting, really encourages them to explore the holiday in these fun ways.
While I set up all the above items on the shelves, I only drew my attention to a few of them. I’m happy to let the kids explore on their own. When there’s an item I intend to use in or as the day’s activity, I can simply bring it off the shelf for that activity. Easy peasy!
We have a whole page dedicated to Purim now, our Purim Hub. Check it out! It will include some of the Purim activities we do this year, as well as the activities we’ve done in previous years.
We also have an entire Purim Activity Bundle ready for your Purim learning and exploration fun! Check it out in the With Love, Ima Shop or on Teachers Pay Teachers.
