There are so many special parts about Sukkot and of course decorating the sukkah is one of them which is only one of the reasons I’m loving our Resist Art Leaf Decorations! These are so easy to make. They are a two step process, which I rarely do. But they practice some great hand strengthening and focus skills and turn out lovely. Your sukkah will thank you!
What You’ll Need
- White Elmer’s glue (in a glue squeeze bottle)
- Black acrylic paint
- Cardstock
- Resist Art Leaf Decorations free printable
- Watercolors
- Paintbrushes
- Scissors
- String or other hanging method
Putting It Together
- Print your Resist Art Leaf Decorations free printable on cardstock. Alternatively, you could just freehand draw your leaves.
- Make your black glue by adding a couple squirts of black acrylic paint to an Elmer’s glue squeeze bottle. Shake shake shake the bottle so the paint and glue start to combine. They don’t have to be mixed all the way at all!
- Invite your child to use the squeeze bottle to squeeze the glue, tracing the shape of the leaves with the glue.
- Let the glue dry completely.
- Use watercolors to paint the leaves.
- Once dry, cut out the leaves.
- Display the leaves in your sukkah by hanging them with string, making a mobile, creating a collage with them, whichever method you prefer!
Finished & Loving It!
These Resist Art Leaf Decorations were a total hit! The kids were definitely challenged by having to use the glue squeeze bottles. We often use glue by pouring it into a dish and using a paintbrush to apply it. Having to squeeze the bottle was so so good for my kids! It made their hands work (hard!), strengthening those muscles.
It also required lots of concentration and focus for them to follow the outlines and try to squeeze the right amount as they traced. Have the kids do the cutting after the leaves dry and it’s also a great opportunity to practice their cutting and fine motor skills too!
The kids love watercolors so this was a fun way for them to do a method they already enjoy but with a twist. It’s really neat to see the black glue outlines pop once the color is added!
And of course, we all loved seeing the beautiful Resist Art Leaf Decorations hang in our sukkah! I chose to hang the majority of our leaves as a simple and quick mobile, as well as scattered the remainder on our table for decoration. I love seeing them twist in the breeze. You could easily glue these to some paper for a collage and hang in the sukkah or even laminate them for placemats!
Decorating the sukkah is of course one of the favorites parts of Sukkot for my family. We always like to make new decorations each year. I love this new addition!
We have a whole page dedicated to Sukkot, our Sukkot Hub. Check it out! It includes some of the Sukkot activities we plan to do this year, as well as the activities we’ve done in previous years.
And don’t forget our Sukkot Montessori-Style 3 Part Cards, a wonderful way to introduce Sukkot! And, now we also have all 13 Jewish holidays bundled together in A Year of Jewish Holidays 3 Part Cards.
