My kindergartner is all about counting whenever he can so I knew he’d love this simple Roll and Count the Dreidels activity for some Hanukkah math fun! The idea is the same as the Roll and Count the Lulav and Etrog activity we did for Sukkot, it just uses different manipulatives. And dreidels are such great manipulatives for counting (and for color matching, size comparison and so much more). This activity is easy to set up and can take as long or as short amount of time as you or your kiddo want!
What You’ll Need
- Dreidels
- Dice
Putting It Together
- Set out some dreidels and dice.
- Invite your child to roll the dice, count the dots (or subitize them) then count out the corresponding number of dreidels.
- Repeat as long as it stays fun!
Finished & Loving It!
Because we did an activity just like this one only a couple months ago, my guy totally knew what to do as soon as I set up the activity in front of him.
He excitedly started rolling and counting. Or just looking at the two dice and doing the addition instantly in his head. What?! When did he develop that skill??? It was so amazing to watch. And when I commented on how he was able to figure out the correct number without having to individually count each dot he was so so proud of himself!
This activity is a great one for practicing counting, one to one correspondence, and manipulating objects. And my kiddo had lots of fun too!
