We love celebrating the birthday of the world in many ways and boy was this giant sized craft, a Giant Happy Birthday to the World Cake, a super fun way to think about this special Rosh Hashanah holiday and celebration!
This Giant Happy Birthday to the World Cake is super simple and allows for lots of creative expression. Sing happy birthday in Hebrew, read Today Is The Birthday of the World, or just talk about how Rosh Hashanah celebrates the world’s birthday as your kids enjoy painting, exploring and creating.
What You’ll Need
- At least three different sized boxes, 1-2 on the larger size (larger than milk carton size)
- Packing tape
- Paint
- Paintbrushes
Putting It Together
- Tape all your boxes closed.
- Then stack them, largest to smallest, taping them to each preceding box either by taping the sides or making tape loops.
- Set out different paints and paintbrushes.
- Invite your children to decorate their Giant Happy Birthday to the World Cake however they wish!
Finished & Loving It!
When kids see a large stack of boxes you know they will be instantly intrigued! Because we went largest to smallest, they also made an accurate prediction the boxes represented a cake. Isn’t it amazing how critical thinking skills like prediction can be so easily interwoven into all types of learning and play?
We used a bunch of older paints that were running out. Initially my daughter firmly wanted the colors to follow a pattern that she set but she loosened up a little.
Then she had the idea to pour the white paint to create icing. It was amazing! She was so excited and proud of herself. And the actual effect was really cool and did look like icing.
Also–don’t you love how I was able to set up this activity for the kids, then stand back and enjoy my cup of iced tea? It’s a perfect invitation to ensure child engagement (and parent observation!) 🙂
I loved how the kids got to choose their own colors and paint however they wished. I also loved how this was an outside art experience. It’s really fun to take crafts and other typically indoor activities outside. My favorite was the icing. And also listening to my kids sing happy birthday to the world in Hebrew! Simple, meaningful Rosh Hashanah fun!
