I introduced this Rosh Hashanah Challah Raisin Match on our High Holidays Shelfie this year and brought it out again this week for some additional, dedicated play, exploration and fun!
What You’ll Need
- Rosh Hashanah Challah Raisin Match free printable
- Black loose parts (or real raisins!)
- Number cards, number manipulatives, dice (optional). We LOVE our wooden numbers from Woodpeckers Crafts! Use WithLoveIma5 for a discount!
Putting It Together
- Print your Rosh Hashanah Challah Raisin Match.
- Cut off the excess.
- Set out some black loose parts or real raisins.
- Have the Rosh Hashanah Challah Raisin Match print outs available and let your child choose one challah print out at a time.
- Invite them to match the loose parts to the raisins, the black ovals, on a challah match print out.
- If they wish, have them count as they take each loose part and match it to the black oval. They can also count the total number of loose parts/raisins on each challah match print out as they finish the card.
- If you have number cards, like our Rosh Hashanah apple counting cards!, or number manipulatives, you can set them out as well. Introduce the number or, if your child is able, ask them to identify the number. They can also match the number to the challah match print out with that same number of raisins.
- We also rolled a die and then used it to help us find the number that matched. And made up our own math facts! So many options!
- Make sure to point out why these challah look different from our Shabbat challah! The challah for Rosh Hashanah are round and often have raisins.
Finished & Loving It!
My first grader is super into numbers so he loves any kind of number or counting activity. This Rosh Hashanah Challah Raisin Match is such a simple way for him to practice one to one correspondence, counting, number identification and Rosh Hashanah symbol review!
Because I knew my guy was ready, I planned to challenge him by setting up simple math facts with our number manipulatives from Woodpeckers Crafts. For example, I set up 2 + 3 and asked him to solve the math fact and then find the challah match print out with the same number of raisins on it. He loved this challenge! Not only did he love what I set up, but then he said he wanted to make up his own math facts. He sometimes rolled the die and then made up a math fact to represent that number. Or, he just made up his own math fact. It was so incredible to see!
While I eagerly created this activity with my first grader in mind, it also worked with my preschooler. At that level he matched the loose parts to the raisin shapes on the print outs. He also practiced counting as he moved each loose part. One to one correspondence is not always automatic for him so this was a great practice.
And of course seeing these Rosh Hashanah Challah Raisin Match print outs made us all eager for the real special Rosh Hashanah challah that will be coming soon!
We have a whole page dedicated to the High Holidays, our High Holidays Hub. Check it out! It includes some of the High Holidays activities we do this year, as well as the activities we’ve done in previous years.
And don’t forget our Rosh Hashanah Montessori-Style 3 Part Cards, our Yom Kippur Montessori-Style 3 Part Cards, or the High Holidays Montessori-Style 3 Part Card Bundle, all a wonderful way to introduce High Holidays!
