This year we explored each Rosh Hashanah simanim (ritual food) with its own individual activity, then culminated all our learning with these sweet Rosh Hashanah Marbled Art Simanim Cards! The kids always love the marbled art process art method and creating the simanim cut outs with their corresponding blessing helped review their special symbolism. And yes, I even turned this review into a fun matching game–see the details below!

What You’ll Need
- Cardstock
- Red, green, brown, yellow, orange paint
- Box
- Marble or bouncy balls
- Scissors
- Construction paper
- Glue
- Markers
Putting It Together
- Place white cardstock in a box, a new piece of paper for each different color paint.
- Add a marble or bouncy ball and start shaking the box to make the marble run through the paint, coloring the paper with cool designs.
- Let dry.
- Cut out the different colored marbled paper corresponding to the following simanim: apples dipped in honey, leeks, carrots, beets, pomegranates, fish or lettuce head, dates, gourd/pumpkin, and string beans. If you need a simanim review sheet, check out our updated version here!
- Print out the simanim blessings and cut each one into an individual strip.
- If you want to play the matching game, set out the blessing strips and the simanim cut outs. Invite your kiddos to read (or be read to) each blessing then encourage them to find the corresponding simanim. Once they make a match, set aside (the matches are ready to make into cards, yay!).
- Fold construction paper in half.
- Glue one simanim shape and their corresponding blessing strip to each construction card.
- Write your new year wishes on the inside of the Rosh Hashanah Marbled Art Simanim Cards.
Finished & Loving It!
Making Rosh Hashanah cards is a common tradition and it’s such a wonderful mitzvah to practice–starting the year off being kind, friendly, and welcoming! I love this activity’s twist by adding the simanim (not as common) and turning it into a review game as well.

I also love that no special products or skills are needed, just fun art, helpful review and beautiful cards the kids can give to share the simcha of Rosh Hashanah! If you want to see how my babies created their cards, check out our reel here.

And if you have not yet made your Rosh Hashanah cards, Marbled Art Simanim Cards or otherwise!, that’s ok too! No need to rush to get them done by the start of the holiday–maybe use the holiday itself to focus and create these sweet cards together! Shanah Tovah!
