Sukkot Book Box and Sukkot Reading Bingo Challenge

A fun and meaningful way to get into the Sukkot spirit is with our Sukkot Book Box and Sukkot Reading Bingo Challenge! We gathered all our Sukkot books (thanks PJ Library!), made our box, and then read some books and played the bingo game!

What You’ll Need

Putting It Together

  1. To make your Sukkot Book Box, paint the outside of the box whatever color you want.
  2. Set out different colors of paint.
  3. Cut citrus fruit in half and invite your child to use the fruit as stamps and make cool citrus fruit stamp paintings.
  4. Once dry, cut out some of the fruit stamps and glue them to your box.
  5. Save other fruit stamps to decorate your sukkah.
  6. Print out the Sukkot Reading Bingo Challenge free printable.
  7. Start reading Sukkot books.
  8. Mark off each space as you come across that item in a Sukkot book. To mark off the space, you can cross off the box, put a sticker on it or use whatever markers you want. Another decision you can make is whether the kids get to mark off multiple boxes from one book or if they can only mark off one box per book.

Finished & Loving It!

Actively reading our favorite Sukkot books while doing this Sukkot Reading Bingo Challenge is such a great way to introduce or review the holiday. I love that it helps kids identify important aspects of the holiday and match these in the books they are reading. And of course they have fun while doing so!

We used some stickers for our markers so there was some added fine motor skills work going on in addition to the close reading and matching. So many different skills development can occur even when engaging in simple activities!

Fruit is a classic Sukkot symbol so I was excited to create a book box that featured that tradition as well as get a jumpstart on some of our sukkah decorations. The kids really had a fun time mixing colors together and making the prints—some science as well as art, so great!

I find that making these holiday book boxes is such an easy and fun way to store all our holiday books. The kids know exactly where these books will be and can grab them and read them as they want. Reading holiday books really is one of the best ways to prepare for the holiday!
