In Israel Yom Ha’atzmaut kicks off with a special torch lighting then a fireworks show so I thought we’d do our hands-on kid-friendly version with a Kick Off Yom Ha’atzmaut Torch Craft & Loose Parts Fireworks! Both set ups are easy and fun and are a simple way of learning more about how this holiday is celebrated in Israel.
What You’ll Need
- Cardstock
- Scissors or cricut machine
- Foil
- Glue
- Red and yellow tissue paper
- Loose parts
Putting It Together
- For the torch craft, first cut a torch shape out of cardstock. You can do this freehand or with a cricut machine.
- Have your child wrap the base with a piece of foil.
- Invite your child to glue the red and yellow tissue paper squares to the top to represent the flames.
- For the loose parts fireworks, bring out the loose parts you want to use and invite your child to create fireworks from these loose parts.
Finished & Loving It!
Both these activities were super easy to prep and as they didn’t take a long time for the kids to do either; we did them both in the same afternoon.
The folding of the foil was a little challenging for the kids. It isn’t a process we’ve worked with before and they had to think about it and try and sometimes try again when the first attempt didn’t work. This is so great! It wasn’t challenging enough to feel frustrating, but just challenging enough for them to concentrate and problem-solve. Such a great way to practice these skills!
The kids had creative license to add the fire of the torch (the tissue paper) however they wanted. They each chose a different approach; my daughter even added some colors with crayons!
I love working with loose parts and fireworks are such the perfect prompt! Don’t fireworks lights look like little sparks of loose parts in the sky?
The kids had fun creating their own fireworks, with whatever colors and shapes of the loose parts they chose. My daughter liked grouping the same colors for hers while my son used the same time of loose part but in different colors. So many opportunities for creativity! I just love it!
I also love these loose parts. They are so beautiful and are such an amazing open-ended activity. We bought ours from Meadowbrook Playschool. Use WithLoveIma20 for a discount if you check them out!
We have a whole page dedicated to Yom Ha’atzmaut, our Yom Ha’atzmaut Hub. Check it out! It will include some of the Yom Ha’atzmaut activities we do this year, as well as the activities we’ve done in previous years.
And don’t forget our Yom Ha’atzmaut Montessori-Style 3 Part Cards, a wonderful way to introduce the holiday!
