This super simple 10 Commandments Search & Find Sensory Bin is such a fun way to review the 10 Commandments for the holiday of Shavuot! The sensory filler is inexpensive and quite the change from our normal play and the kids loved it. They also liked the challenge of having to search and find the 10 Commandments images. Easy, simple and meaningful fun!
What You’ll Need
- 10 Commandments matching images. You can print out your own or use our 10 Commandments 3 Part Cards
- Sensory filler. We liked these fake flower leis from Dollar Tree!
- Sensory bin or tray
Putting It Together
- Place one set of the 10 Commandment cards on the base of your sensory bin or tray.
- Cover with your sensory filler of choice. We used the fake flower leis from Dollar Tree. Snip the string and pull off the individual flowers. They are so soft and fun!
- Set out the other set of 10 Commandment cards.
- Invite your children to sort through the sensory filler to search and find the 10 Commandment cards buried under the filler and then match each image to the one set aside.
- You could add an extra challenge by placing a paper clip on each card that is in the sensory bin then searching and finding it with a magnetic wand, transferring it to its match on the side!
Finished & Loving It!
When my daughter saw that I bought these leis she was already excited and intrigued. I told her I had something special planned for them. She loved seeing the super simple sensory bin I set up. It’s such a great way to use this inexpensive product. And of course, the lei flowers can be used again and again, for Shavuot play as well as all kinds of other play, exploration, and fun!
My boys really enjoyed searching for the cards. This is not a challenging sensory bin and that’s ok! They enjoyed the texture of the soft flowers, finding a card, then matching it to the one on the side. Even though this is simple (to set up and for them to perform), they are still practicing many skills. They are searching for a card among other items, grasping it with their pincer grasp, then finding its match by looking at the images.
After they finished matching the ten cards, I read each of the 10 Commandments (found on the bottom of the control card in our 10 Commandments 3 Part Card set). In this way the kids reviewed the 10 commandments as they played (identifying the image and using their recollection to remember what commandment the image corresponded to) and as they listened to me read the commandments out loud.
I love the fun and enjoyment they had with a pretty serious topic but one that when presented as a learning through play opportunity, was a meaningful and fun Jewish learning experience!
