DIY Wooden Seder Plates

This year I wanted to have the children create special seder plates that could be used during our seder and also for pretend seder play and these DIY Wooden Seder Plates came out so absolutely beautiful that I want to use them all year long!

The DIY Wooden Seder Plates are super easy to make and customizable to whatever decoration method you wish. The kids really enjoyed creating them with some fun process art and using the final product.

What You’ll Need

  • Wooden circle, approximately size 8 inches diameter (if you don’t want to buy a wooden circle, you can always use sturdy cardboard). We bought ours from Woodpeckers Crafts. Use WithLoveIma5 for a discount!
  • Six small wooden circles, approximately size 2 inches diameter. Also from Woodpeckers Crafts!
  • Acrylic paint in the colors of your choice
  • Flat rectangle of cardboard
  • Seder plate coloring page by @JewishTogether
  • Crayons or colored pencils
  • Mod podge (we made our own by just adding some water to glue)
  • Glue gun

Putting It Together

1. Decorate your large wooden circle. We did this by placing dots of acrylic paint along the top of the circle, approximately a centimeter apart. Each child chose which colors they wanted to use. They then took their cardboard rectangle and, at an angle, dragged it from top to bottom of the circle, swiping down rows of paint as it moves. It’s such a fun and beautiful process art experience!! If you did not want to decorate your plate this way, you can paint it however you wish!
2. Have your child color the six ritual foods on the Seder plate coloring page by @JewishTogether. Cut the foods out before or after coloring.
3. Use mod podge to glue the ritual food circles to the smaller wooden circles. Make sure to add a layer of mod podge to the top of the discs to keep everything glued down and shiny (so pretty!).
4. Once the large wooden circle and the six smaller circles are dry, use a glue gun to glue the smaller circles around the perimeter of the large wooden circle.
5. Enjoy using your beautiful DIY Wooden Seder Plate at your Seder or for some fun pretend play!
6. This activity would also pair well with our Passover Seder Nomenclature Cards or your favorite Passover Seder book!

Finished & Loving It!

Instead of having all the kids do the art part of this activity at the same time, as we normally do, I set each one up individually and we all watched as their beautiful wooden plate was painted in such a fun way.

They were fascinated watching the colors spread and also enjoyed having the choice of which colors they wanted to use on their own plate. This method was easy enough for them to do themselves which is always something I want to promote. Check out our reel on Instagram to see a video of the colors spreading across the plates!

Each step of this activity is really easy but the final product is so stunning! When we glued on the last of the small discs featuring the ritual foods the kids were so happy and excited to see the Seder plates really come to life!

We have plans to use these plates during our Seders this year but also in our playroom for some spontaneous creative imaginary play, yay!
