Mount Sinai, The Ten Commandments, and Us Craft

Mount Sinai and Us Craft

Mount Sinai is a very special part of the upcoming holiday of Shavuot and thus needs its very own special and engaging craft! Shavuot, when we celebrate the receiving of the Ten Commandments, starts tomorrow night so today in preparation we read our favorite PJ Library book about the holiday, The Littlest Mountain, and created our own Mount Sinai project to help us remember how close this little mountain came to the heavens and the special commandments that were shared from there ❤️

What You’ll Need

  • Poster or craft paper
  • Brown paint
  • Cotton balls
  • Yellow construction paper
  • Glue
  • 10 Commandments printed out
  • Scissors
  • Cardstock
  • Flair pen
  • Watercolor pencils
  • Water
  • Paintbrush

Putting It Together

  1. After setting the stage by painting the mountain and adding storm clouds and lightning, I added kid-friendly versions of the Ten Commandments which we read as a family.
  2. Have each family member create a self portrait. These sweet self-portraits were made by using watercolor colored pencils that the kids got for Hanukkah. They are so much fun! We drew ourselves in pencil, outlined everything with flair markers, filled everything in with these special colored pencils, then used a paintbrush dipped in water to carefully blend the colors. I love how they turned out!
  3. Once dry, add the self portraits to the bottom of the mountain because throughout history, Jews have thought of themselves as having personally been present at this awesome event.

Finished and Loving It!

Mount Sinai, The Ten Commandments, and Us

My kids loved making this craft and were really engaged while discussing the Ten Commandments. We displayed this poster in our hallway where they can continue to see it long after the holiday ends. Not only is it a lovely decoration for the holiday, it serves as a reminder of what the holiday means and something special the kids made themselves.

Shavuot is a great time to talk about the importance of Torah, of our connection to God, and of rules. The PJ Library website has a lot of information about the holiday, as well as crafts and recipes to help celebrate the holiday in fun and meaningful ways. Chag Sameach!
