This afternoon my preschooler and I had a great time working on our new Hanukkah Pattern Cards. These Hanukkah Pattern Cards are a wonderful way to engage your child in Jewish learning, as well as improving skills and development from working with patterns such as making predictions, making logical connections, using reasoning, making educated guesses, and developing critical thinking and logic.
What You’ll Need
- Hanukkah Pattern Cards
- Scissors
- Laminator (optional)
Putting It Together
- Purchase and print your Hanukkah Pattern Cards. Depending on the pattern sets you use, you may need to print multiple pages of the pattern cards (page 8).
- Cut out the pattern cards.
- Cut out the pattern sets (if you want to use the pre-made pattern sets) and/or blank pattern set grids and pattern set cards (if you want to make your own patterns).
- Laminate the cards if you wish.
- Set up your invitation to learn: place a pre-made pattern set or your own pattern that you create. Invite your child to match the pattern by choosing the corresponding cards. I set up the blank pattern set grids for my preschooler to use to place the matching cards.
- When there was a new image, we discuss its significance to the Hanukkah holiday.
Finished & Loving It!
My preschooler really enjoyed this activity. I could tell it made him think (that little tongue sticking out is such the classic concentration face!). But he was also really excited every time he found a matching card. He’d exclaim, “the doughnuts!” and then happily match it in its correct place.
I love that we were able to talk about these Hanukkah symbols and their importance to Hanukkah while practicing all the great skills that working with patterns help develop.
I used the same images as in my Hanukkah Montessori-Style 3 Part Cards so that the images would be consistent and allow for easier identification and reinforcement of these symbols and learning.
If you play with these Hanukkah Pattern Cards, I’d love to hear all about it! Share in the comments or send me an email. Enjoy!
