Shabbatasaurus: Dinosaur on Shabbat

A super fun and engaging Shabbat theme for the dinosaur lovers!

In our house we have long been dinosaur-obsessed in general and have totally fallen in love with the song our Education Director introduced to us at Sunday school, “Dinosaur on Shabbat.”

My kids sing it all day and week long. So when I told them I wanted to start our first Shabbat of 2019 with a dinosaur-themed Shabbat they were over the moon excited.

Since it’s still winter break we had lots of extra time to work together on multiple dinosaur and Shabbat crafts and activities. All these ideas are easy, hands-on and super fun.

I’ll be honest though, there were more steps preparing these crafts than I usually set up. And that’s because of one small word: paint!

We often paint for fun, but I don’t usually involve paint in larger multi-step projects because we have to wait for the paint to dry before taking that next step. And as we all know, waiting is hard! But we did use a lot of paint for this Shabbat theme and had Thursday as our paint day. Everything was dry and ready for the finishing touches by Friday, just in time for Shabbat 🙂

The kids loved being actively involved in preparing for Shabbat in such a unique and special way, especially with a subject they love so much.

Check out what our Shabbos looked like and answer that door when the dinosaur knocks because you’ll have a Dino-fabulous time!!

Set the mood with the Dinosaur on Shabbat song

This song is so cute! You can find multiple versions on YouTube but this version by Shaboom! is our favorite. It’s not quite the same as we sing at Sunday School but the kids quickly caught on. We played the song on repeat while we crafted.

After we lit our candles and did our Shabbat blessings, we played the song a few times again and all sang together, welcoming not only Shabbat, but also the Dinosaur on Shabbat!

There’s a dinosaur knocking at my door, knocking

One Two Three (knock knock knock)
There’s a dinosaur knocking at my door,
And she wants to have Shabbat with me.

She wants to light the candles,

She wants to drink the wine,
She wants to eat the challah,

She does it all the time!

There’s a dinosaur knocking at my door
And she wants to have Shabbat with me

Wants to have Shabbat …

Wants to have Shabbat …

With meAnd you and us and them

And we and they and everybody in the whole wide world!

Sung by Isaac Zones with Shaboom!

Dinosaur on Shabbat Coloring Book

My kids love coloring and they love books so it was obvious we’d need a special Dinosaur on Shabbat coloring book. I made this coloring book and it has the lyrics to the song and some cute Shabbat and dinosaur pictures. It’s perfect to connect the words of the song with the images of Shabbat.

Read the Dinosaur on Shabbat book

Did you know there’s a book actually called Dinosaur on Shabbat?! It’s not the same lyrics as the song but it’s still a cute introduction to Shabbat. And it has dinosaurs. And is called Dinosaur on Shabbat. So you have to read it!

Thursday afternoon after all our painting was the perfect time for us to snuggle on the couch and read all about dinosaurs.

Start off your reading session with Dinosaur on Shabbat but definitely gather your other dino favorites to read throughout the day and on Shabbat. Your dino fans will love it!

Prepare Your Dino Fabulous Ritual Objects

As with every Shabbat, you need Shabbat ritual objects. When you are doing Shabbatasaurus, a dinosaur-themed Shabbat, these ritual objects better be dinosaur-ized!

Shabbatasaurus-worthy Table

You can’t have a dinosaur-themed Shabbat without the table looking extra special … and extra dinosaur covered! We made a super cute and oh so easy dinosaur track table runner as well as a couple dinosaur decorations to set the mood. Throw on a couple of your favorite dinosaur figurines and maybe your dinosaur books and your Shabbat table will easily transform into dino-central!
