How To Make A Hanukkah Book Box

Hanukkah is here and we are so happy to celebrate the holiday by doing one of our favorite activities: reading fun holiday books! We read a ton of books in our house and are forever grateful to PJ Library for sending us new Jewish-themed books every month. I like to pull out the holiday books for every Jewish holiday and make them very easy for little hands to grab. This year we made this practical and sweet Hanukkah Book Box to gather all our Hanukkah favorites. I look forward to many fun hours snuggled together on the couch reading our Hanukkah treasures!

What You’ll Need

  • A box in decent shape. You can easily cut off the lids to an Amazon box.
  • Paint
  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Yellow construction paper or shiny wrapping paper
  • Markers or crayons (optional)
  • Hanukkah stickers (optional)

Putting It Together

1. Paint the outside of your box. We chose Hanukkah blue.

2. Paint your kiddo’s hands and carefully press onto a construction paper of their choice each hand with fingers spread and the two thumbs overlapping.

Sister’s Handprints (notice she chose both her favorite colors, yay!)

And Baby Brother’s Handprints. Squee! I love little kids’ handprints! They are just so so precious!

3. Let the handprint Hanukkiahs dry.

4. Once dry, cut candle flames from yellow construction paper or shiny wrapping paper. If you don’t have yellow paper, just use a marker, crayon or yellow paint.

5. Glue the handprint Hanukkiahs to the sides of your box.

6. Have your children decorate the rest of the box as they wish–drawing latkes, gelt, and sufganiyot, or use Hanukkah stickers.

7. Put your favorite Hanukkah books in the box. Set it close to your favorite reading nook and enjoy–again and again!

Finished and Loving It!

The two littler ones could fit side by side

But we definitely have to rotate the box to make sure Big Brother’s handprints are equally represented!

Making this Hanukkah book box is so simple and easy! It’s totally hands-on and involves your kids and is a sweet keepsake of their lovely little hands. It can be personalized however they want (stickers, drawings, etc.) or left sweet and simple. And it makes grabbing Hanukkah books for reading time so so easy!!
