I Spy Passover Plague Activity

This I Spy Passover Plague activity is so simple to make and is loved by all my kids. I also plan to bring it our during our seder as a teaching tool for the 10 plague section!

What You’ll Need

  • Empty clear container. Need a hack to remove a label from a plastic container? Heat it with a hair dryer and slowly pull off the label as the heat melts the glue. Worked like a charm for the container we used for this activity!
  • Rice, dyed or not. Leftover sensory bin rice works fine!
  • Items to represent the 10 Plagues. We used many items that we already had in our animal toy bin and our Passover storage bin (yes, we have a huge bin filled with our Passover goodies that we bring out each year!). A few items we made, like cutting a circle of black paper for darkness and my oldest making lice out of a pipe cleaner. Love that one! You might also notice that we used a (super cute) suitcase for representing Death of the Firstborn. When we talk about the plagues with our own children, or the young children in my classroom, we do tell them the last plague involved the Egyptian firstborn sons dying. This was so sad that Pharaoh finally let the Jews go. The suitcase symbolizes the Jews being able to leave and traveling from Egypt.

Here are the plague items that we used:

Putting It Together

1.If you want, take pictures of the items beforehand, add them to a Word or other editable application and print them out to show the kids what to look for. I did this and glued it to the top of the lid so the kids could see what items to find.

2. Put your 10 plague items in the container.

3. Add the rice. Shake it around a bit

4. Give to a child and watch them have fun and learn about the 10 Plagues at the same time!!

Finished & Loving It

The hardest part of this activity was waiting for Amazon to deliver the items! Once you have them, it’s the simplest activity to put together but it has a large impact.

All a kid has to do to search is move around the container and the rice will shift, revealing different objects.

All three of my children loved turning the container around and around to look for the different plagues. They liked being able to see the pictures of the items to look for on the lid. They excitedly called out each one as they found them. Therefore, it’s the perfect way to practice for saying the 10 Plagues during the Passover Seder!

Baby Brother liked having Ima or Abba tell him which item to look for, then he’d point it out. Was also very helpful in practicing his words! Yay speech development practice!

One of the benefits of doing so many activities about the 10 Plagues is that I can buy the materials in bulk and use them for multiple activities. You might ask, “Won’t the kids get bored with the same items?” No! They actually really enjoy being able to recognize the plague and find it again, in various activities. This repetition helps them connect the item to a plague symbol which of course then connects it to Passover. Truly, it’s a wonderful learning experience for them!

This I Spy Passover Plague Activity is really simple to put together, but can be enjoyed again and again. And when the kids have had enough? Just dump the contents into an empty bin and presto! you’ve created a new Passover sensory bin!
