Passover Matzah Playdough & Playdough Mats

We love playdough so we were all excited to explore Passover Matzah Playdough & Playdough Mats! Playdough is such a great sensory experience. It is also so much fun to build with and can be a fun way to practice telling the Passover story.

Passover Matzah Playdough & Playdough Mats

I made this special matzah playdough because I wanted the kids to explore matzah with their senses. You definitely pick up on the special texture of matzah and it’s unique smell with this playdough. I added some cinnamon and my daughter said it reminded her of charoset—yay!

What You’ll Need

  • Matzah Playdough ingredients: 2 cups matzah, 1/2 cup salt, 2 Tbsp cream of tartar, 2 Tbsp oil, 2 Tbsp cinnamon (optional), 1 1/2 cup boiling water
  • Passover Playdough Mats printable
  • Laminator

Putting It Together

  1. Make your matzah playdough. Boil the water. Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl. Add oil and water to the bowl and mix. Once it cools a bit knead it until its texture is smooth and forms a ball.
  2. Print out the Passover Playdough Mats printable.
  3. Laminate your playdough mats.
  4. Set up the mats and your playdough and invite your kids to explore!

Finished & Loving It!

I made a whole bunch of playdough mats because I wanted to give my kids the opportunity to tell the Passover story and to set up a playdough seder. Of course you don’t have to use all the mats at the same time, or at all. Just print and laminate the ones you want to use.

This recipe won’t work during Passover for some families since the matzah touches water but isn’t cooked within 18 minutes; but it is mixed with boiling water. It also includes cream of tartar which some families aren’t comfortable using during Pesach. @inspiredbambini has a kosher for Passover playdough recipe that uses baking soda and potato starch as its main ingredients and would totally work!

The matzah playdough feels like a giant matzah ball. If it starts to get dry add some oil and keep playing. We’ve been taking it out and playing with it all day.

I love how excited my daughter was to make a playdough Baby Moses. My son, on the other hand, was happy to just smush and mold and squeeze the playdough. Both ways are totally fine ways to play!

There’s no right way to play with playdough or to use the playdough mats. Some kids may enjoy using the mat as a template and building similar playdough patterns on top of the mat. Other kids will just enjoy using the mat as a protective surface and play with the playdough however they want. Even if they don’t use the playdough mats to build Passover-related creations, they are still getting exposed to the Passover story, symbols and elements which is a great way to build their Passover knowledge.
