Messy Rosh Hashanah Apples and Honey Sensory Play

Since it’s going to be 100 degrees here today (why California fall, why?) Baby Boy and I decided to beat the heat this morning and head outside for some fun Messy Rosh Hashanah Apples and Honey Sensory Play from our High Holiday Activity List 🍎

What You’ll Need

  • 2 cups cornstarch
  • 1 cup water
  • Yellow food coloring
  • Bowl
  • Play apples–plastic or wood would work best!

Putting It Together

1. Make the yellow ooblek by combining the cornstarch, water and food coloring.

Finished & Loving It!

When I invited Baby Boy to this Messy Rosh Hashanah Apples and Honey Sensory Play, I explained how on Rosh Hashanah we dip apples into honey and how the ooblek looks like honey. Then I let him explore to his heart’s content!

And guess what? This activity is taste-safe! Nope, it won’t taste very good (and definitely NOT like honey!) but if you have an oral seeking child or just one who really thought it was honey, it would still be safe and that’s always comforting to us mamas!

Baby Boy went all in with this Messy Rosh Hashanah Apples and Honey Sensory Play–actually, feet and all!! He loved dipping the apples into the ooblek then moving them around. And of course he added some other friends as well (hi there Kwazii!).

This activity is such a great developmental activity for kids. Playing with ooblek develops fine motor skills as kids strengthened their hands playing with it.

Messy Rosh Hashanah Apples and Honey Sensory Play also presents open-ended opportunities for a child’s imaginative play and explorative play. Yes, reading your favorite Rosh Hashanah book (Apples and Honey would be perfect with this activity!) can invite your child to explore Rosh Hashanah themes with this activity, but it also allows for so much imagination and experimentation in their play.

Ooblek is so easy to make and is also super easy to rinse off outside. But yes, I wouldn’t try this inside unless you have a splat mat or patience for cleaning ooblek off your table or floor!

I put some plastic wrap over the bowl and can’t wait for the big kids to get their hands in it after school! Not as sweet as honey but definitely fun to play in!
