Passover Matzah Sensory Exploration Play Activity

That’s a lot of words but this activity had it all and was tons of fun! My younger two kids dug in and loved touching, smashing, painting and playing with the matzah in this Passover Matzah Sensory Exploration Play Activity. It’s also a great way to use up last year’s old matzah!

What You’ll Need

  • Bins or bowls
  • Flour “paint” and paintbrushes (optional)
  • Whatever items you want to play with–we grabbed some wild beasts (yay for always trying to share some Passover story knowledge AND wild beasts are the perfect smashing tools!), our plastic Seder plate and some measuring cups

Putting It Together

1.Set up your bins and materials outside because this is messy play! I also put down a large piece of cardboard to try to contain some of the mess.

2. If you want to make the flour “paint,” mix a cup of flour with water until it reaches the consistency you desire. Bring out some paintbrushes so your child can paint the matzah if they wish.

3. Step back and let your children explore and play with the matzah and materials however they desire!

Finished & Loving It

This activity was very simple to set up, was a great way of not wasting the old matzah, and was super fun for both my younger two kiddos.

Baby Girl loved painting the matzah with the flour paint. She tried using the paint as mortar to build with the matzah but that didn’t quite work.

Baby Boy loved smashing the matzah with his hands and the animals, then scooping the crushed matzah and dumping it into the Seder plate.

They both had tons of fun and I enjoyed sitting outside in the sunshine watching them!

Playing with the matzah in these ways are also wonderful sensory experiences and motor skill development practice. Touching the different textures of the matzah when it’s whole and crushed, crushing it with your hands, and touching the paint are all different tactile sensory experiences. Using your hands and fingers, as well as holding the animals, helps develop the muscles and fine motor skills in your child’s hands. Manipulating the paint brush and measuring cups are also wonderful for developing these skills!

Smashing the matzah for the first time! Slightly tentative and then he let loose!

And you could always throw in some storytelling so the kids can practice telling the story of Passover!

Simple, easy, kid-friendly Passover fun is always a win in our house!
