Purim Character Clothespin Dolls

These Purim Character Clothespin Dolls were so easy to make and are absolutely adored by all three of kids! They were creative in their design and in their imaginary play. And it melts this Jewish mom’s heart to hear play that includes “Boo Haman!” and “Queen Esther will save us!” We are so ready for Purim over here!

What You’ll Need

Clothespins
Paint or markers
Paintbrushes
Construction Paper
Scissors
Yarn
Hot glue gun and glue

Putting it Together

1.To have a full “set” of Purim characters, prepare at least 5 clothespin dolls: Queen Esther, King Ahasuerus, Haman, Mordecai, and Queen Vashti. You can prepare many more as well! We have lots of townspeople 🙂

2. “Dress” your clothespin dolls by either painting or using markers. We used paint and did not even attempt to make anything resembling real clothes, gowns or robes. The kids loved just putting color on the dolls. Depending on your child, the clothes could be much more intricate.

3. Use a sharpie and draw a face on each doll.

4. Cut small pieces of yarn and glue the yarn (Mama used a glue gun, my kids aren’t ready to do this step themselves yet!) to the top of the clothespin for hair and/or to underneath the ball to make a beard. Trim as needed.

5. Cut and decorate two crowns out of construction paper and markers. You can even add jewels if you have tiny ones! Glue the crowns to the heads of Queen Esther and King Ahasuerus.

6. Cut a triangle out of black construction paper and glue to Haman’s head.

7. Add any other decorations or details that you want.

8. Once everything is dry, enjoy the free play!

Finished and Loving It!

These Purim Character Clothespin Dolls were so simple to make and the children loved having full ownership on how to “make” and decorate them. They knew the basics (Queen Esther has a crown, Haman has that triangle hat) and were happy to incorporate those characteristics and have free range over the rest!

Once finished, the children instantly engaged in some super-neat, proud Jewish-mama play. I heard phrases like “Boo Haman!” and “Queen Esther will save us!” That’s right! Go Esther! Yay Purim!

I love how much they enjoyed playing with the dolls, acting out themes from the Purim story, and just having a great time together.

These dolls could easily be used to “act out” the story of Purim, your own megillah play!, the night of the holiday. The possibilities really are endless!
