What You’ll Need

Putting It Together

  1. Make your favorite cupcakes or just grab some from the store.
  2. Print the DIY Happy Birthday World! Cupcake toppers free printable on cardstock.
  3. Cut out the toppers, tape or use a sticker to attach them to toothpicks.
  4. Turn it into an activity by letting your kiddos decorate the cupcakes with their favorite toppings.
  5. Read a sweet birthday themed PJ Library book like our favorite, Today is the Birthday of the World, while eating and talking about how Rosh Hashanah is the birthday of the world.

Finished & Loving It!

My kids are always up for a sweet treat. They started school this week which always brings emotional and physical exhaustion even in years without a pandemic. That made this treat even more sweet. It obviously works in the weeks leading up to Rosh Hashanah or during the holiday itself!

We do lots of apples and honey play and activities, which is awesome, but I always try to also do activities that focus on some of the deeper themes of the High Holidays, such as connecting that Rosh Hashanah is the birthday of the world. This is such an easy way to have that discussion, to talk about how G-d created the world and how Rosh Hashanah starts the Jewish calendar. It’s also really nice to do activities about the world’s birthday to pause and think about how thankful we are to have such an amazing world. Talking about these things while eating cupcakes definitely helps too!

Years ago my daughter had an art themed birthday party and the kids decorated their individual cupcakes. They loved it! I replicated that activity here, with the same adorable paint palettes as cupcake plates and toppings holders. Such an easy way to make it extra special and fun. Don’t have toppings or just don’t want to deal with them? They are definitely not required and the kids (and grown ups!) will love their cupcakes however they are!

I like the idea of adding DIY cupcake toppers because they are just so easy to do. We’ve done them for themed birthday parties before and for today, it was just another simple way of reinforcing the idea that we are celebrating the world’s birth.

Today is the Birthday of the World is one of our favorite books. The illustrations are lovely and the message so great: be the best that you can be and that is the best gift you can give G-d for the world’s birthday. If you have it, it makes an easy and meaningful book + activity pairing. And if you haven’t signed up for PJ Library yet, you totally should!

These Happy Birthday World! Cupcakes totally ticked so many boxes of being a delicious treat, a simple way to talk about how Rosh Hashanah is the world’s birthday and it was also a super fun activity. All of those ingredients mixed together created a pretty super, meaningful (and delicious!) Rosh Hashanah experience!
