Salt Dough Seder Plates

Salt Dough Seder Plates for the win!! Our original idea was to make seder plates out of modeling clay but we don’t have any clay right now and as it’s not an essential item and it’s quarantine, we aren’t going outside the house to get it! The solution: make some salt dough, print out a Seder coloring sheet as a guide, and let the kids create then paint their own salt dough seder plate models!

The kids loved getting their hands in the dough (it’s a tougher dough than playdough so really good for strengthening little hands), as well as shaping the ritual items then painting them. And now we have a lovely new table decoration for this year’s Seder!

What You’ll Need

  • Flour
  • Salt
  • Water
  • Paint

Putting It Together

  1. Make your salt dough: combine 2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, and 1 cup water. Knead, then create! All staple pantry items so hopefully doable during quarantine!
  2. You can let your creations air dry or bake them in the oven at 250 degrees for about 2 hours or until dry.
  3. Once the seder items were dry, paint them. And there you have your salt dough seder plates!

Finished and Loving It!

The salt dough is easy to make and use and works perfectly with pantry items when you’re out of modeling clay and can’t or don’t want to get to the store. The kids liked making their own ritual items and got pretty excited when they remembered all the items.

The Salt Dough Seder Plate had a special place of honor on our Seder table. Not only is it a fun and easy craft, but also the perfect Seder decoration!

The kids also enjoyed coloring the Seder plate coloring sheet after making their salt dough seder plates so the learning through play method just kept continuing which made this mama very happy! There are a ton of seder plate coloring sheets available from a quick Google search. We liked the one I found from Scholastic.
