These Shabbat Sensroy Cards are the perfect calm and fun Shabbat toddler activity! Even my big kids enjoyed feeling the different textures and making rubbings. Use this Shabbat Sensory Cards activity while you are making Shabbat dinner Friday afternoon or for a lovely Shabbat afternoon activity on Saturday. Or really, anytime you want to bring the peace and joy of Shabbat into your home!
What You’ll Need
- Shabbat symbols. I googled and found images that matched what I was looking for: Shabbat Shalom in Hebrew, Shabbat candlesticks, challah, a kiddush cup and a Star of David.
- Cardstock
- Sensory materials. Use whatever you already have in your house! I pulled down some of our craft bins and found pipe cleaners, dyed pasta, yarn, dyed rice (yay for sensory bins!), colored rocks, colored sand and pom poms. Quite the assortment! I also used my glue gun to create raised sensory words for the Shabbat Shalom card.
- Glue
Putting It Together
1. Print out your Shabbat images onto cardstock. Make sure you size the images so that they fit the way you want on the cardstock. I wanted my images to take up most of the space on the cardstock.
2. Glue on the different sensory materials you found. I used my glue gun to glue on some of the items, like the pasta, and Elmer’s glue for the rice and rocks.
3. Once dry and set, share with your children. They can touch and feel all the different textures of the materials.
For some of the cards you might be able to do paper rubbings. We did this with the Shabbat Shalom card and the Star of David card. I had used my glue gun to trace the words on the Shabbat Shalom card. To do a rubbing, place a piece of printer paper on top of your card and have your child carefully rub peeled crayon lengthwise over the words and images. It’s so neat to see the designs that appear!
Finished & Loving It!
My toddler loved touching the various sensory materials. Did he rip off a few? Yep, but that’s just fine too.
My older two enjoyed making a rubbing of some of the cards. They decorated some others. These rubbings and decorations then became our Shabbat decorations for the week!
For all the kids, these cards served as an easy and fun way to talk about Shabbat and Shabbat symbols!
These Shabbat Sensory Cards are a simple and fun way to celebrate Shabbat and enjoy a range of tactile experiences!
