What You’ll Need

  • T-shirt. Yes, this is a t-shirt craft! So cheap ($1 at Dollar Tree) and easy! But if you’d rather use fabric, that’s totally fine too.
  • Acrylic Paint(s)
  • Paint brush(es)
  • Dinosaur stencil. You can use store-bought ones, cookie cutters, or make your own like we did! To make your own find your favorite dinosaur image with a google search. We used the triceratops from this one, screenshot it, and printed it out at 170%.
  • Tape
  • Sharpie (optional)

Putting It Together

1.I have two big kids that made this craft so a t-shirt was the perfect material for us to use. One t-shirt can easily make two squares, and thus, two challah covers. One for each kid makes everyone happy! Cut your t-shirt from under the armpits in a straight line to the bottom hem. Then cut across a horizontal line just below the armpits. This will give you two squares.

If you’d prefer to use fabric for this project (especially if you have extra cloth lying around!), just cut your fabric in a square or rectangle shape that will cover the challah platter you plan to use.

2. If you want, hem the edges of the fabric so you have a nice finished appearance.

3. Use a dinosaur stencil and paint a dinosaur in the middle of your cloth. You will probably have to tape down the stencil so it doesn’t move while you paint.

My daughter used the inside of the stencil and painted that way. That method will give you a colored shape of the dinosaur.

My son wanted to do something different (of course!). We used the dinosaur we had cut out from our homemade stencil, taped that down, then he painted around the dinosaur. That will leave a cloth-colored dinosaur. Either way is great and both are easy and totally 100% kid-doable!

I love how you can use the stencil in different ways to get unique pictures of the dinosaurs. I also always love using homemade stencils!

4. Let the paint dry. Once it’s dry, careful peel off the stencil. Your beautiful dinosaur will be left behind!

5. We then used a sharpie to write Shabbat Shalom (or Shabbat Shadino!) on our covers. My daughter added an eye with the sharpie as well. My son made a word bubble for his dinosaur. The possibilities are endless!

Finished and Loving It!

This Dinosaur Challah Cover is so easy and fun to make! Using a t-shirt makes it cheap as well (and for those of us who don’t live near a craft and/or sewing store, a much easier way to get this material!).

We had to make two covers, one for each of the big kids, because of course they wanted their own! And on the big night, Shabbatasaurus, we carefully placed both covers side by side over the challah so everyone’s challah cover was represented.

If you don’t feel like hemming, don’t! That would leave the craft 100% kid-made, which is always great.

Whatever methods you use, the end result will be beautiful, the process will be fun, and the pride your children will have because they made something all by themselves for Shabbat will be huge!

And for the dinosaur lovers, any additional dinosaur Shabbat item just magnifies the fun and excitement for the event!
