This year I put together a fun activity for us to do as we read all our beloved Hanukkah books: the Hanukkah Reading Bingo Challenge! One of the first things we pull out every Hanukkah to prepare for the holiday is all our fabulous and well-loved Hanukkah books. Years ago we made an adorable handprint Hanukkiah book box to store our holiday books for the season and each year I pull it out so happily … I’m a total sucker for kid handprint crafts.
What You’ll Need
- Hanukkah Reading Bingo Challenge free printable
- Space Markers—pen/pencil/crayon, stickers, or whatever other marker you’d like to use
- Hanukkah books! Check out our favorites here!
Putting it together
1. Print out the Hanukkah Reading Bingo Challenge printable.
2. Start reading Hanukkah books.
3. Mark off each space as you come across that item in a Hanukkah book. To mark off the space, you can cross off the box, put a sticker on it or use whatever markers you want (dreidels could be cute but won’t stay put if you move the sheet!). Another decision you can make is whether the kids get to mark off multiple boxes from one book or if they can only mark off one box per book. You can also include rewards for finishing the challenge. Of course the joy of reading these Hanukkah books is a pretty good reward in itself
Finished and Loving It!
This was the first Hanukkah-related activity we did of 2020 and it was such a hit! What a fabulous way to shift our mindset into the Hanukkah season!
The Hanukkah Reading Bingo Challenge identifies common Hanukkah symbols to help the kiddos review and categorize these items as important to Hanukkah. The challenge part of it can act as a fun motivator to read more and more Hanukkah books. And reading more books of course helps the kids learn, review and prepare for the holiday. And … it’s fun!
What are your favorite Hanukkah books to read during this magical season?
