This morning we had our first Passover lesson in my kindergarten and first grade class. The main objective for this class was to learn the Passover story and have the children be able to tell the story in their own words. To help us all practice telling the story we made the cutest Passover Story Character Puppets! My students, as well as my own children once I came home, loved creating these puppets and it was the perfect way to engage them all in telling the story of Passover.
What You’ll Need
- Passover Story Character Puppet Printable
- Scissors
- Crayons
- Glue
- Popsicle Sticks
Putting It Together
1.Print out your Passover Story Character Puppets from this printable.
2. Color the puppets.
3. Cut out the puppets. We did not cut close to the characters, but instead just made a large oval or square around the character and the character’s name. It was really important to me that the name stayed with the character to help remind the children which character was which!
4. Glue the puppets to a popsicle stick.
5. Tell the Passover story with your new puppets!
Finished & Loving It!
These Passover Story Character Puppets were so easy to make and enjoyed by both my students and my own children. Once they were finished, we practiced telling the Passover story. We also brought out our 10 Plague puppets from last year to have a more in-depth storytelling experience.
The children loved feeling engaged by creating, then using the Passover Story Character Puppets to tell the Passover story. And they totally got it! Repetition + engaging activities truly helps the children remember these important characters and story line. By the end of class, the children were all jumping in to tell parts of the story.
These four characters can easily be used to focus on the following main themes of the story:
- the Jews’ history of slavery in Egypt
- Moses asking Pharaoh to “Let my people go!”
- Pharaoh refusing, but finally, after the 10th plague, allowing the Jews to leave
- the Jews coming to the Red Sea and being too afraid to enter until Nachshon trusted G-d enough to enter the Sea
- Miriam leading the Jews in celebration of our freedom upon safely crossing the Red Sea
Telling the story of Passover is one of the most important parts of the holiday. I love how these Passover Story Character Puppets help make learning and retelling that story easier and a lot of fun. I can’t wait to bring them out during our seder!
