Rosh Hashanah Honey Playdough Loose Parts Play

Today was the perfect day for some easy, calming, sensory-pleasing Rosh Hashanah playdough play with our Rosh Hashanah Loose Parts Play, a new honey playdough recipe, and our Rosh Hashanah playdough mats we’ve used in previous years.

What You’ll Need

  • Rosh Hashanah Honey Playdough (recipe below)
  • Rosh Hashanah themed loose parts. Check below for what I used and some ideas that you could incorporate too!
  • Rosh Hashanah Playdough Mats (optional)

Putting It Together

  1. Make your Rosh Hashanah Honey Playdough.
  2. Set up a loose parts tray (or tabletop) with whatever Rosh Hashanah-themed loose parts you’ve gathered.
  3. Print out and laminate the Rosh Hashanah Playdough Mats if you want.
  4. Invite your children to explore and enjoy the smell of Rosh Hashanah!

Finished & Loving It!

Playdough is such a great activity for Rosh Hashanah and of course any time of the year. Playing with playdough strengthens little hands. This new recipe is a bit drier than I usually make which causes the hands to have to work a little harder to manipulate it = better strengthening! The loose parts encourage connection to the holiday but also allow a lot of creativity. And the playdough mats do the same thing—reinforce Rosh Hashanah symbols, can be used as a guide for creation or just a pretty surface to work on.

For our loose parts I set up wooden apples, fake pomegranates, DIY bees from pistachio shells (last year we used shell pasta and it also worked great), DIY honeycomb stamp made from bubble wrap and a block, DIY bee stamp from a small container and glue gun, and green and yellow painted balls from a previous year’s sensory bin. Other ideas could be bee figurines, cookie cutters, wooden stamps of bees, honey and apples, those green pouch lids (my husband threw away my stash I was saving for this! It’s like he thought they were trash haha!), pretend food, wooden honey stir sticks (I have a bunch and forgot to put these out). What else would you add?

My kids had so much fun adding the loose parts to their playdough in many different and creative ways. Some used the Rosh Hashanah Playdough Mats as a guide, while others just did their own thing. They loved the DIY stamps and I loved their excitement and creativity for exploring the loose parts and the playdough.
