A Few Tu B'Shevat Favorites

Tu B’Shevat originated long ago when rabbis declared the 15th of the month of Shevat as the birthday for all trees. Jewish law has lots of rules around when you can do what with a tree, and specifically, its fruit. So knowing its birthday is important.

Now, it’s seen as the beginning of the planting season in Israel. It’s also viewed as an environmental holiday, celebrating all the wonderful things trees and plants and this earth has given us. It also acknowledges the importance of tikkun olam and repairing our planet, which we know is suffering.

To celebrate Tu B’Shevat, we eat fruits from the seven species of Israel (wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates), often as part of a seder. Many people also engage in environmental activities, such as planting trees and cleaning up nature.
